(Spare the rod and spoil the child)

  6. i am a person who is residing now in a europian country where parents dont practice physical punishment. for all who opposed the authors ideas and concepts please come and have a look what has happend to the societies in these so called " developed" countries.
I was absolutely devastated to see the level of social breakdown and how children behave. sorry to say people you must experience this by having ur child without punishing.
I had been physically punished by my teachers and parents and i am glad that they did that to me. Because of them i was able to make out good from bad.
An also i wanna say that physical punishment should not be severe and frequent. If the child did a big wrong surely he should be punished and adviced.
the above people who commented dont know what happend to the mom who didnt punish her son who robbed at a young age..shame on you lads. and for the person who commented the author as a muslim..dont insult muslims since you dont know islam in full. atleast try to understand buddhism prior you criticizing another religion which you dont know..For Mr "kolu"..you have never been to another country and known the social structure of it man and you are bullshitting like a pro.
a very good article. thanks for uploading.

  13. @Anonymous You are 100% correct. Asians are way better than the europian people. There is a greater bond between children and parents in Asian culture than the American and Europian culture although Asian parents use copral punishment.

  14. Pandukabaya,

First of all since you have blocked copy and paste, i can copy what you wrote so i can answer.
Greater parenting bond in Asia than in west? Really?
Don’t you think a mom is west doing cry if their child got hurt? Don’t you think her heart weep? Don’t you think she feel the same pain? Don’t you think a child in west won’t cry if the mom got hurt? Do you think those humans live in west part of the earth do not love their youngsters? How you say young humans in West part of the earth have no mental capacity to identify right abd wrong? I know kids in America, who gave their week lunch money– and starve the lunch time – for Tsumami ads for Sri Lanka. Do you think those kids did that extremely kind deed because their parents abuse them in the intention of making them better?
What is your basis to say that humans live in west part of the earth have low parental bonding and love? Do you have any proof? Or you just made some sort of a connection in your mind?

Just because Singapore is the only un-democratic country with money, we don’t have to follow them. Why not North Korea, they are more disciplined than Singapore. Do you know even the whole country have the same hair cut? How cool is that? What’s use basis to say Singaporeans are law abiding people because of child abuse? Do you made that connection in your own mind or is there any proof? In the other hand Singapore have one of the most comprehensive education system in the world, designed by Sir Ken Robinson. Don’t you think that have not play any role? How about extremely large police force? And even it is legal in Singapore to abuse children, how many child abuses happen in Singapore? Do you know? Do you know even if it is illegal to abuse Children in Sri Lanka, it happens in daily basis, everywhere? Has Sri Lanka become extremely moral because of that?

How do you say you don’t have evil thought? Just like a rapist justifies rape, you justify child abuse. Just like a rapist may bring Pakistan, Afghanistan or Kingdom to justify their argument, you bring Singapore.

Normally I get no pleaser talking to rapists or child abuses or poachers, who are three group evil people with one thing with one common – abusing feeble and justify that by feeble arguments. Hope any child in the world won’t get to have a father who fancy child abuse. I really do.

  16. Anon,
By treating Humans live in western part of the earth surface – or any part of the earth surface – as just humans, does not make me "Kada Yanawa to Suddha". At least those Siddahs, can write their Language in their own letters - unlike you who even don’t bother to use Sinhala characters to write in Sinhala!

I have heard Pakistanis say similar things–it is not rape to force sex their wives or physically punish them if they refuse to participate in the act. And they blame NGOs for calling that rape, just like you are blaming NGOs for calling physical punishment, as child abuse. You don’t have to join an NGO to separate what is right and wrong, or have kindness in your heart. All you have to do is pull your head out of your ass and look at the sunlight.

Raising a child is the hardest job in the world. I know every parent may get mad one time or another, be physical on their children. But that do not mean they accept or promote that as a legitimate tool. I’m not taking ageist frustrated parent hitting their child and regretting that later.
The word abuse means, “misuse of power”. If you have no parenting skills, if you are really worst as a parent, then you have to use physical punishment on children as a tool – that make you a horrible parent – not a child abuser.

All parents who use physical punishment as a tool, just because that is the easy way for them, are “Abusers”. My parents belong to that group too. The first person to tell me not to hit my child is my father, who punishes me most violently when I was young. He knows now, it didn’t work and most of all, he knows now he was capable of doing better than that. I’m proud of him, because he had courage to admit he was wrong and advice me how to be a better parent than him. And I have a feeling, if not for idiots back then who promote physical punishment as a tool, my parents would not hit me at all.

Teachers who hit their children are bad teachers with very poor communication skills. And sometimes they are intentional child abusers too. I have met few of them.

If you really want to learn about Singapore’s education system, study Sir Ken Robinsons education principles. If you want read something in Sinhala, read “රසල්ගේ අධ්යාපනික මත වාද”

ape demawpiyoth e kianne abusersla...what a joke man..
all the thing are things you have heard..and man you are trying to map majority with few incidents which yo have observed. now when you do a research get a large sample. i ahve heard is not a scientific fact as well as i have met few people that abuses children or reading one or two books by two or three authors who try to bring their own concepts. We just cant accept your theories based on vague evidances.
As a person i have to say that i have been punished. not severely. condemn severe physical punishment. but we cshould make children what we call in sinhala "pawata lajja baya athi karawanna ona". some times kind advices are not enough. i think you are trying to insult our parents by calling them child abusers or rapists.of you dont punish thats your policy. well the conseqquences will not be evident in near future. allow them to grow up until 35-40 and wait until u get 55-60.. then ull realise.
about the teachers.i had a treacher who punished mr.. but still he is a god to me and i beleve that he layed me the path to become an engineer. Dont just bring your few of them bullshit. and these teachers wernt idots at all..i think you have to check ur sources prior coming into a discussion rather than lying on muslims, teachers and majority of parents.
you have the typical mentality of muslims are evil, parents are child abusers and criminals have human rights.lol

  18. Anon,

I didn’t knew we are taking about scientific studies. If that is the case, there is no point even talking about this subject in the first place. There are enough scientific subjects has been done for quite long time. That is how modern education system gave up corporal punishment all together and adopts the concept “children are people too”. If you don’t know, physical punishment cames to us from old British education system. It's not over the begin with. Why Sri Lanaks are so keen to accept faild western concepts and love them so dearly?

Read the American Academy of Pediatrics report on punishment for a latest study.

I cant insult the ignorance. But if your parent knew better - yes. im insulting. Just because everyone does it, that do not mean it is right. My great grandfather who put red ants on his son’s naked body thought he was doing the right things. There was a society to support that believes. Bertrand Russell once fired from the NYU because he wrote a paper against corporal punishment on children. Fortunately things watered down over the years and only few likes you remain who justify “lighter” corporal punishment at this point of the history. Hopefully they will eventually die out and childhood corporal punishment would be thing in the past just like slavery.

Mind you, I’m not arguing argents the concept of punishment. Punishment is required. I’m arguing ageist corporal punishment.

And you who complain me picking few examples relevant to me, and complain again, and again, bring up your isolated experience. Where the your large sample of your? There are more engineers in west and in Japan and places like that where they do not practice corporal punishment on children at all. Why? Those engineers invent more things than we do. Why? There are more collage graduates in American than high school drop outs? why? America produces more graduates a year than all the graduates in the whole world - in last millennium combined? how they achieve such a goal without corporal punishment?

u are talking about corporal punishment. and say chldren are people too. yes i doo agree with your argument. children are little people. then there shouldnt be any prisons or death sentenses for all the criminals too aint it? simnce they are people too?
you are continuosly bringing in us researches and always talk abut western findings. and know nothing about eastern concepts. then you say US has a very high graduate number. even UK has a huge number of graduates. u may dont know that. its simply because that anyone can pay and do a deree. there is no free education like in sri lanka in these countries. in sri lanka only 2% goes to unis since due to the govenrment selection programme.
Even me i am oppose to severe punishment. now if yyou have read my previous comments carefully, you may have very well understand that i ddnt opposed severe physical punishment but i said i would accept a light physical punishment.Severe physical punishment is indeed abusive.
You are saing that physical punishment came from Brits. and i have to say you dont know history. read old "jathaka katha", and Jana katha. go to vilalges and stay their for few months at least. i really feel that you are an arm chair theorist. Sorry. I am researching on serieal killer lives and their behaviours, and most of them were dessereted by parents and dropped out of schools not because of physical punishment. yet its their parent's disconcern. Read about Ted Bundy, Geofrey Dahmer, Andrei chikatilo, Ed gein and and other serial killers.
The researchers you say about may or may be not valid since a research is a concept brought out from checking a small sample and saying the outcomes are valid for every person , every society and every condition. which makes a research concept open for arguments and any one can do another research and say the previous study is wrong under certain conditions.
Again better you look at my previous comments that i didnt agree with severe punishment. Better to correct your course prior coming to a conclusions and critisizing.

your argument is valid for both sides mr,. since without physical punishment, a child can go wrong as well as with physical punishment a child can go wrong..lol.. so either by doing it or not doing it you can go wrong..all these are concepts. there is no absolute truth..you think science is an absolute truth. but sorry to say that science is set of concepts created for peopl's survival. these concepts can change over time. and change is for survival.

I don't know about science, I ain't here to discuss about science.

However, going back to my TV example, tha grandpa thought he is doing the right thing and he was "correcting" the TV, but he was only leading it to it's death day-by-day.

I do not know about your concepts but I am sure no kid is learning anything from punishments. They only avoid doing "bad things" (?) ("Bad" in your point of view.) because their fear of the punushment. And that is not what a society need, we need kids - and everyone else - understand why "bad" is bad.

If a kid is not mature to understand why bad is bad, he neither can learn nothing from punishments. He only fears it.

As soon as he is free of fear, he'll continue doing bad, as no one ever told him why bad is bad.

Punishments are like keeping a rubber-ball underwater by force.

  27. Anon - the one accuse me using western examples and then talk about western killers,

Most of those serial killers were good children - obedient and kept things to themselves. Are you somehow trying to imply without physical punishment children turn in to be serial killers Or it’s entirely parent’s fault that they turn in to psychopaths? Isn’t Psychopathy is a mental disorder?

You seems not know what corporal punishment is either. We (Sri Lanka) don’t practice corporal punishment on Adults. Even though death sentence is open, we don’t practice it. Then why only on children?

No, you can’t pay to get a degree. You have to learn to get a degree. You have to pay for the learning. My argument there was, if they are so rotten because of lack of physical punishments, how they have morels to achieve those educational goals in large numbers.

Even in Jathaka Katha there are enough examples on not using fear, but use of knowledge, to teach something to someone. To begin with, Jathaka Katha and other Indian stories are most gentle tools invented for teaching.

While the King claims me not knowing Western Culture, You claims, me not knowing Sri Lanka. If my personal experience any relevance to this matter (which I thing not), that vary from village schools with “Pol Athu Wahala” (in deep down south), to National Schools in Colombo to Schools in New York. I still teach part time with immense pleaser.
I agree your idea on studies. And matter of fact the pediatric society report, which you have not read, claim corporal punishment sometimes brings instant results, but still advice not to take that path on various side effects. Just because something works, that does not make it right (unless you are Hitler).

Yes. I do agree all those are conditional. If you have poor parenting skills, you have no other options; you have to use corporal punishment. And also, every parent (including me) experiences “I don’t know what else to do” movements one time or another. But that is entirely deferent from establishing corporal punishment as a tool (which I argue against).

I understood you agree on “lighter” physical punishment. I hope you have read my comment above and notice that part I made my wishers clear that people like you will eventually die out making corporal punishment on children thing in the past. Since you repeat the word “lighter”, would you please declare the boundaries of “lighter”? May be you can be titled as “Father of light corporal punishment on children”.

u dont know nothing about serial killers and guessing most odf em were good kids. better you research your self first. every child doesnt have to be a phsycopath to be a killer. and Corrupted society, Parents disconcern can drive a little mind insane. You go and check out on you tube Tedbundy's final words before he was executed. and he was not a fool and his IQ was 130 which proved him as a highly intelligent person. I can give you hundrends of examples like these.
I said that light physical punishment means not using "the vevala" or slap the youngster until he bleeds. But to make him afraid of bad consequences of the severity of the thing which he did. How about if he killed an animal? i would say at that point that we should giv him a lil punishment to show that he feels the same pain as the animal felt when it was dying. Sometimes little children dont understand the consequences of death and pain to sombody else. thats why we should make them understand.
after passing yeaar 20 it is very hard to controll a person or to turn him in to the right path. since most of them dont have the intelligence you have.
Lastly all i have to say is as parents, they have the ultimate responsibility of making their children responsible and unharmful human beings to the society. thats why we call parents "pubba deva- Forst Protectors/gods" and Pubba aachariya-first teachers".In the dire situation physical punishment should be used if it does any good.
All you brought here are only theories which may or may not be valid depending upon the situation. If you are not practising it your problem. If i am practising its my way because i have understood the practicallity of punishing and you have understood the practicality of not punishing. And if some parents practise that based on the idea of making children good people you cant call them psycopaths.if so i have to say that your are kind of a psycopath too. Since every person has a mental disorder of some kind. You are always talking about "rights" but how about "social responsibilities". thats what happend to most of us we always shout out about loosing our rights or some one else's rights but most of the time we dont talk at all about our responsibilities. A pure example is you.
However thanks for the discussion. I was able to test my ideas with somebody else's ones. people are different in ideas and methods which they follow and practise my friend since this is a conceptual world. Life is not just to exist but to fight for existance. so people do make theories to do that. We cant say that your's and mines are the exact truth. Its just like saying using toilet papers is better than using water. somebody else may say using another thing for the purpose would be the best.everything changes by time. But all the best keep on carrying..:D...

@buddhajeeva : I think you will be satisfied with this

    ReplyDelete
  37. @pandukabaya: This is not a problem about "satisfying" me or some one else. I normally expect people to stand deffending their ideas when others question them. If that person is skipping those questions, that means the very person isn't sure about what he said.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @buddhajeewa : ok. I'm confident about my vision and my ideas and I always try to defend them. By the way, you have accused me for deleting your comment " Is that the only response you can make ..... " . It is not deleted. I'm always willing to listen to other's opinion.
